Herta Schnall was married to Gisela’s cousin Jacob Schnall. She was born in Vienna, Austria, on May 27, 1925. She was the only child of Bela and Augsti Singer and on December 10, 1938, her parents brought her to the train station to put her on a kinder (child) transport. In a few European countries some organizations took major risk and raised money to send hundreds of children to safer parts of Europe. Herta was sent to Hook Van Holland in the Netherlands. When the Nazis invaded the country in May of 1940 she moved from place to place. She was never truly safe and was lucky to survive a close run-in with Nazi officers. Below she recalls her childhood during WWII.
